When an object is close enough for the sucker to stick, the sensor detects the proximity of that thing, and the microcontroller activates the sucker. A more sophisticated control mechanism may be used, according to Bartlett, so that a robot or human could hold onto an object for a certain amount of seconds before releasing it. A human operator could pick up, move, and let go of objects as needed. The glove was tested on a variety of things, including metal toys, a delicate hydrogel ball, and the bent end of a spoon, and it was able to pick them up without damaging them. However, the team asserts that the method is as effective in the air unless an object is sufficiently rough that the sucker is unable to make a proper seal.
